    Flashing Gear Indicator
    on: November 16, 2016, 05:53:19 pm
    November 16, 2016, 05:53:19 pm
Riding home this evening, everything normal then suddenly I notice that the gear indicator is just a flashing 'minus' sign. Changing gear and even turning the ignition off then back on doesn't cure it.

The bike is going in to the dealer tomorrow to have the grip heaters fixed so they've agreed to take a look then but I can't find anything in the owners manual to indicate that this is a failure warning. So it appears that the gear indicator has packed up.

Anyone heard of this before or know any better?

    Cheers.

Hope it is not too serious!!

Do you have a quick shifter? I believe if you do, and you get the dash, it might indicate a failure / fault with that component. If not, then it must be the ECU indicating a component failure, or perhaps the gear sensor is faulty. Just guessing here  :021:

    No quickshifter, no.

Hopefully the dealer can find out.

If you stop the bike's engine when still in a gear above third, the display flashes as you describe and also when you turn the ignition back on again, this function is described in the Bike's Handbook. So possibly a faulty gear selection monitoring switch.

I saw that but the book says the display is different from the 'minus' sign that I was getting. And it occurred as I was moving, not stopping the engine in 3rd or above. But I am assuming that there is some intermittent fault in the gear selection or monitoring system.  :028:

Hi Skids, best for luck getting to the bottom of this problem, but should be sorted out under warranty. Let us know what the problem turns out to be.

When I stalled my CR while in a higher gear the display flashed the minus sign until I put it into neutral.

2 hours at the dealers..... :012:

Initially, the replacement ECU showed a fault code (thanks Honda  :076:), then they swapped one from their loan bike showed a different fault code. Eventually, they traced a "broken wire"  :015:

Started home on quite warm grips but they quickly cooled off and when I got home, they were warm at best on their hottest setting.

Next time I'm taking the loan bike until it's sorted!  :230:

I have the same problem with the gear indicator showing the minus, but then when I put into neutral and tried to go to first gear it wouldnt go in gear.  The gear indicator started to flash parts of the gear number and I could not change gear. Turned the engine off and restarted and all went back to normal, What the f... is this? Bike only has 8000kms and just out of warranty. Could be very dangerous in heavy traffic if you can't put the bike in gear.

I've had this happen a couple of times where the display has just shown a line '-' after I've stopped usually in a higher gear......(invariably SMIDSY cager avoidance).

However, it hasn't affected the operation of the gearbox and has cleared itself after the "switch it off, switch it back on again treatment".
Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow - unless it's a bike ride.....
