Quick question: does the 15+ model starter motor work with the bike in gear (clutch in, obviously
)?
Mine doesn't but I could have sworn it used to.

18 VFR800X - 16,000 miles

mine does, I use it often.
red trafficlight, stop the bike in first gear, killswitch on, killswitch off, wait until you know it will turn green (same road to work every day...for 9 years now) , clutch in, start and go.
Only problem was my battery when I left the heated grips on (step4) and it toke longer to go green
Battery almost died, replaced it a week later, no problems since.

Well in that case something has broken.

Will it start in neutral but with the clutch pulled in? If not then it must be the clutch switch. I would try a good squirt of switch cleaner to see if that does the job, especially at this time of year.
I'm assuming that the side stand switch is working as usual?

It will start with the clutch in, but then why would it not if the bike is in neutral? Not sure I understand your logic there m8 but thanks for the advice.

I’ve had a clutch switch go before. Bike would not start at all if the clutch was pulled in, either in gear or in neutral. New switch cured it.

I would check the continuity of the clutch switch first it should be open circuit with the clutch lever released and closed circuit with it pulled in. Multi meter will tell you this in seconds. It's the most likely culprit imo.
