New Michelin Road 5 tyres - just fitted
on: February 21, 2018, 06:10:38 AM
G'Day all from Oz!

Well, I bit the bullet and have replaced the Pirelli Scorpions that came with my 2016 VFR800X with the new Road 5 sport-touring tyres from Michelin. I'm led to believe these are replacing the Pilot Road 4s.

Only a short ride home on them today but I can already say they have noticeably improved ride quality - something I wasn't really expecting, but very welcome - particularly considering many of the roads here are pretty ordinary. They make the Pirellis feel harsh in comparison.

I will be heading over the aptly named Mount Glorious tomorrow morning to see how they feel in the twisties - will report back after that.

Never really bonded with the Pirellis so will be interested in how these go as I have had many Pilot Road 2,3 & 4 sets on other bikes.

Cheers  :031:
Robert

Hearing lots of good words about the 5 though I haven't looked at cost yet. Had 3s & 4s in the past and loved them, especially in the wet & damp that we get quite a lot over here. Currently have Metzeler Roadtec 1s on and am really loving them.  :028:

Not sure what the situation is in other territories, but in Oz the Road 5s have been priced cheaper than the Pilot Road 4s by about 10%...

very interested in this topic - new tyres needed for me before the TT in June and I couldn't decide between PR4's or Roadtec 1's . . . . might be the 5's if they're decent  :152:

I rate the Roadtec 1s very highly, more so than the PR4 albeit marginal, though they are pricier. I'm still looking at the mileage but again, looking better than the Michellins. Been riding the 1s through the winter with no issues at all.

It's going to be a tough decision between 5s and 1s again.

Well, my update on the new Road 5s will be a bit limited...  After weeks of sweltering through 36º temps in our humid sub-tropical summer, today it was 17º, lightly raining and foggy on the mountain...
As a result, I can't comment on how they will handle in the dry, but can say that the tyres were very confidence inspiring in these conditions - even if I was bloody cold in an airflow summer jacket!  :138:

In a fortnight I will be taking a few weeks holiday to do a 5000km+ trip across some of Australia's best roads, so should be able to give a good account of the tyres as the journey unfolds.

Cheers from Oz!  :030:
Robert

PS - The price of the tyres here were about $AUD450, which would be roughly £250 in Blighty...
