Power drain causing battery to go flat
on: July 27, 2021, 09:19:56 PM
Hi I have a 800 Crossrunner 65 plate RC80 and just covered 1200 miles on Scotland trip (July 2021). Scenario, bike started at home ok and met up with other travellers at Forton services from Preston and when ready to set off battery flat and had to be push started. Overnight in Oban so disconnected battery overnight and started OK in morning and no issues on 320 milke trip and following 2 days no issues but disconnected overnight. On fourth day after 100 mile ride to Inverary, bike battery flat on start up and had to be push started, again no probs after that. Got home OK and started investigating. Used old battery taken off bike 3 months ago just in case was a new battery fault. Volt meter shows 13.4 volts running and less when engine stopped. Amp meter on negative shows a huge drain when ingition switched on and when started shows a large amp positive (old ammeter with plus or minus 10). Ammeter shows a large movement between positive and negative when running which is strange. lights flicker when running either tickover or revs. On rectifier each yellow shows 6.4v output on each wire and red output 13.6v when engine running. Rectifier not hot. I am absolutely clueless as to what it could be. Any suggestions please? Bike done 17k miles.

Hi fixed the problem as it was the new battery not filled with acid correctly. Should first fill with acid then wait five hours then top up before sealing. Replaced battery now problem gone away.

Thanks for posting the result. I've got a battery issue at the moment but it doesn't sound quite the same. Useful that you posted the end result.
